Since the market peaked in late April the market has been struggling to keep its head above water. There is a lot of fear out there and when markets are acting like they currently are – i.e. multiple series of lower tops and lower bottoms – it is NOT a good sign. It is still possible that this is the long awaited correction and not the beginning of a much deeper slide. It IS, without question, a time for extreme caution and not a time to initiate new positions, unless you are a trader and move in and out of stocks on a daily or weekly basis.

However amid this confusing and downward trending market the solar sector has been showing some signs of life. Since the second week in July a number of solar stocks have turned the corner and started to show positive momentum. These stocks are: FSLR, JASO, SOL, SOLF, TSL and YGE. If the market is indeed in a correction and not the start of something worse – these stocks appear to have the best chance of becoming the sector leader when the market uptrend begins again. In addition, these stocks are also the stocks in the sector that have the highest relative strength toward their peers in the solar sector – another good sign.
Below is a table which shows the sectors performance since June 1 2010 and from the beginning of the year. You can see that some of these stocks are also the best performing stocks and some have actually shown a positive return year to date.
