Water Stocks; Mueller Systems Announces Mi.Hydrant™ for Smart Water AMR/AMI

Water Stocks; Mueller Systems Announces Mi.Hydrant™ for Smart Water AMR/AMI
“Smart” fire hydrant takes center stage in communication grids connecting meter to utility distribution

CLEVELAND, N.C.--(Investorideas.com water stocks newswire, http://www.water-stocks.com/ )--Meet the smartest fire hydrant on the block.

“In today’s complex environment, information flow is a critical part of managing water flow”
.Beginning this year, utilities will have a cost-effective and innovative new option for building AMR/AMI smart grid communications for water management with the Mi.Hydrant™, from Mueller Systems. Mi.Hydrant uses radio transceivers built into fire hydrant caps to communicate water usage-related data that can help utilities improve efficiencies and customer service. It eliminates the need for costly utility leases and enhances the value of existing water infrastructure assets.

Mi.Hydrant is part of the Mi.Net™ Mueller Infrastructure for Utilities advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system from Mueller Systems. Mueller Systems is part of Mueller Water Products, Inc. (NYSE: MWA), the leading provider of water infrastructure, flow control and piping component system products.

“In today’s complex environment, information flow is a critical part of managing water flow,” said Hassan Ali, General Manager of Mueller Systems. “Mi.Hydrant from Mueller Systems transforms the fire hydrant into an active part of a fixed two-way AMI network.”

Mueller Systems is the first and only provider to recognize that utilities can use existing hydrant infrastructure to be part of a communications grid, linking multiple components of a water infrastructure system; permitting utilities to improve information flows; and the ability to respond to customers’ needs. Mi.Hydrant systems can proactively identify and resolve critical issues around operational efficiency, water conservation, and workforce productivity -– before they affect service.

Mi.Hydrant is an enclosed transceiver that replaces the pumper cap of existing fire hydrants, blending aesthetically and operationally into the existing water infrastructure. It can provide multi-path radio frequency coverage. The device first collects and stores water infrastructure data in its own internal memory. Then, both on demand and at scheduled intervals, it transmits data to the Mi.Net™ Mueller “Infrastructure Network for Utilities” AMI system. Mi.Hydrant thus extends a 900 MHz public broadband, multi-path network for billing, metering and intelligent management of data and water.

Because many municipal codes require fire hydrant placement every 500 feet, utilities can take advantage of the cost savings of using what they already have. The Mi.Hydrant has a range of two-to-three times that distance, creating important communications links that can be built or be part of a communications grid for AMR/AMI from the meter to utility distribution communications, and back again. It provides a complete, end-to-end, two-way “smart water” network for AMR and AMI. Utilities can reduce equipment and labor costs and can eliminate the need to navigate the procedures, politics, and logistics of locating and installing additional structures on which to place communication devices.

The FCC-compliant Mi.Hydrant features open architecture, so while it is ideally deployed in a fire hydrant from Mueller Co., the leading provider of fire hydrants in the world, it can also be used with other brand fire hydrants. This empowers utilities to transition in a scaled, cost-effective manner. Mi.Hydrant can also be used to communicate data to:

•Increase operational efficiency for utilities
•Account for non-revenue water
•Reduce carbon footprint by streamlining labor and water usage
•Improve customer service through timely and accurate data

Water Stocks Sector Close- Up; Environmental Impact of Produced Water in Oil and Gas Industry

Water Stocks Sector Close- Up; Environmental Impact of Produced Water in Oil and Gas Industry

How Nature Group (LSE: NGR-GB.L), Siemens (NYSE: SI) Water Technologies and Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB: WSCE) are providing Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry

Point Roberts, WA, Delta, BC - April 23, 2009 - www.InvestorIdeas.com, a leading global investor and industry research portal covering water, environment and oil and gas sectors, presents a water stocks sector close-up on produced water in the oil and gas industry, problems and solutions. Publicly traded companies providing solutions include Nature Group (LSE: NGR-GB.L), Siemens (NYSE: SI) Water Technologies and Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB: WSCE ).

According to the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), part of DOE’s national laboratory system, approximately 15-20 billion bbl (barrels; 1 bbl = 42 U.S. gallons) of produced water are generated each year in the United States from nearly a million wells, and more than 50 billion bbl of produced water are generated each year at thousands of wells in other countries.

As water and environmental issues now play a major role in the future of the oil and gas industry, here is how three public companies are coming up with solutions.

Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTCBB:WSCE) an oil and gas solutions provider of water remediation and environmental technologies , announced in December 08, that Weatherford International Ltd., (NYSE: WFT) had executed a letter of intent for the testing of Wescorp's wholly-owned water remediation technology, H2Omaxx, in two projects in South America. H2Omaxx is a water remediation unit that consistently provides safe, effective and economical separation of oil from produced water.

When asked if Wescorp Energy (OTCBB: WSCE ) technology works for all produced water applications, on shore and off shore, Dave LeMoine, Vice President of Business Development commented, “In general the answer would be yes, Wescorp’s technology has been independently proven to have a high level of scalability and effectiveness, allowing it to be used on a single well to multi well applications or projects such as Offshore Platforms or in conventional or unconventional oil development such as the Oilsands in Alberta. Wescorp gives the oil companies three streams, Clean water Clean solids and Ultrafines and resalable oil
The client problem could be environmental, cost related, regulatory compliancy, revenue generated, process improvement based, or a host of other issues. “

According to NATURE GROUP’s (LSE:NGR-GB.L), CEO, Richard Eldridge, “ There is now wide agreement within the petroleum industry, governments and scientists that focus should now be put on dissolved organic components, heavy metals and production chemicals. The oil in water content shall be as low as possible and the industry shall make use of best available technology (BAT).”

The Nature process for treatment of produced water is based on addition of patented
coagulant/flocculant in existing or partially modified water systems. The agent is injected
into the produced water upstream a static mixer or various process equipment (pumps,
valves etc.) to provide sufficient in- mixing. The agent separates dispersed and dissolved
hydrocarbons and is floated and skimmed off in a flotation vessel downstream the in-mixing
point.

SIEMENS A G ADR (NYSE: SI) Siemens Water Technologies was recently selected by Petro-Canada to provide a system for treating coal-bed-methane (CBM) produced water at the Mitchell Draw CBM Project near Gillette, Wyoming, USA. The system will treat 72,000 barrels per day (3 MGD) of CBM produced water, removing contaminants like sodium (Na) and total dissolved solids (TDS), which will allow the plant to meet current state regulatory requirements.
Siemens states it has 750 onshore and offshore produced water treatment systems, treating about 6 million barrels of water per day.

According to Eddy Isaacs, managing director of the Alberta Energy Research Institute, “Companies now have to worry about the environment as much as they need to worry about their production.” *1

So What is Produced Water?
The US Department of the Interior defines Produced water as “mainly salty water trapped in the reservoir rock and brought up along with oil or gas during production. It can contain very minor amounts of chemicals added downhole during production. These waters exist under high pressures and temperatures, and usually contain oil and metals. Because of this, they must be treated prior to being discharged overboard. As with drilling muds, following treatment, they must be tested for toxicity and cannot exceed set discharge rates.”

Most produced waters contain combinations or mixture of: Dissolved inorganic salts, dispersed oil droplets, dissolved organic compounds (dissolved "oil"),treatment and workover chemicals dissolved gases (particularly hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide),bacteria and other living organisms, and dispersed solid particles.

The Produced Water Society reports, “The ability to efficiently and economically dispose of this water is critical to the success in the oil production business. “

Investorideas.com New Showcase Water Stock, Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTC BB: WSCE) Provides Solutions for ‘Produced Water’ in Oil and Gas Industry

Investorideas.com New Showcase Water Stock, Wescorp Energy Inc. (OTC BB: WSCE) Provides Solutions for ‘Produced Water’ in Oil and Gas Industry

Point Roberts, WA, Delta, BC - March 23, 2009 - www.InvestorIdeas.com, a leading global investor and industry research portal covering water, environment and oil and gas sectors, announces a new featured showcase company, Wescorp Energy Inc.(OTCBB:WSCE ),a company providing technology based solutions for the treatment of contaminated ‘produced water’ for the oil and gas industry.

Oil and gas production worldwide generates a tremendous amount unwanted waste water - water that has been contaminated with hydrocarbons, sand, drill cuttings, organic and inorganic salts. The produced water is contaminated naturally from the formation and artificially through oil and gas processing. The handling, treatment and disposal of the produced water are some of the most controversial and environmentally challenging issues oil and gas producers face today. Produced water from hydrocarbon operations creates massive volumes of waste that requires remediation.

Headlines in a March 2009 article in Oilweek.com, “Water—its use, reuse and conservation—has become almost as important to Alberta’s economic future as oil”, forecast the importance of finding solutions within the industry.
http://www.oilweek.com/articles.asp?ID=638

Wescorp Energy Inc. is an oil and gas solutions provider that specializes in water remediation and environmental technologies for the global oil and gas industry. One of the company’s primary technologies, H2Omaxx, is a commercially scalable water remediation unit that uses patented aeration technology to consistently provide safe, effective and economical separation of oil from produced water. Final independent verification testing was completed in November 2008. Analytical results proved the H20maxx unit increased the recovery of oil and reduced the amount of hydrocarbons in the treated produced water to less than 0.001% or 10 parts per million.

According to the company, “Virtually anywhere in the world that oil is produced, contaminated produced water becomes an unwanted byproduct. Water becomes contaminated naturally through associated formation water in conventional oil and gas production. Unconventional oil production including Oil Sands development in Alberta, Canada contaminates huge amounts of fresh potable water during the production and processing of the oil.”

According to Industry Canada, “Strict Canadian environmental regulations have demanded that Canadian engineers and scientists develop innovative remedial technologies to clean-up a broad spectrum of contaminants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons.”
http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/ogt-ipg.nsf/eng/dk00095.html

Wescorp’s H20maxx technology is not going unnoticed. In December 2008, Wescorp announced that Weatherford International Ltd., (NYSE: WFT) executed a letter of intent for the testing of Wescorp's wholly-owned water remediation technology, H2Omaxx, in two projects in South America. Wescorp and Weatherford are currently in negotiations for a possible exclusive long-term global cooperative agreement. H2Omaxx units provide oil and gas operators an opportunity to increase their profits, and reduce their operational costs by reducing, reusing, and recycling water without the use of flocculants.

Weatherford (NYSE: WFT) is one of the largest global providers of innovative mechanical solutions, technology and services for the drilling and production sectors of the oil and gas industry.

Report Warns Businesses and Investors about Growing Water Scarcity Impacts from Climate Change

Report Warns Businesses and Investors about Growing Water Scarcity Impacts from Climate Change

Climate Risks Mean New Problems for Vulnerable Sectors, including Electric Power, High-Tech, Agriculture and Beverages

BOSTON, MA. – February 26, 2009 - Global climate change is exacerbating water scarcity problems around the world, yet few businesses and investors are paying attention to this growing financial threat, according to a report issued today by Ceres and the Pacific Institute.
Water is crucial for the global economy – driving every industry from agriculture to electric power to silicon chip manufacturing. Beverage, apparel and tourism also rely on supplies of clean, potable water to survive and grow.
Decreasing water availability, declining water quality, and growing water demand are creating immense challenges to businesses and investors who have historically taken clean, reliable and inexpensive water for granted. These trends are causing decreases in companies' water allotments for manufacturing, shifts towards full-cost water pricing, more stringent water quality regulations and increased public scrutiny of corporate water practices.
The report concludes that climate change will exacerbate these growing water risks – especially as the world population grows by 50 million people every year. Already, China, India and the western U.S. are seeing growth limited by reduced water supplies from shrinking glaciers and melting snowcaps that sustain key rivers. Meanwhile, agricultural and power plant production have been cut back due to more frequent and more intense heat waves and droughts in large parts of Australia, California and the southeast U.S.
"The business community needs to wake up to the reality that water is becoming scarcer and will likely become even more so in many parts of the world due to climate change," said Mindy S. Lubber, president of Ceres, which published the report, Water Scarcity & Climate Change: Growing Risks for Businesses and Investors. "It is critical that companies and investors boost their attention on this issue."
"This research sheds important light on the critical link between climate change and water issues. For businesses, addressing the risk factors of water scarcity and conflict is as urgent as addressing energy security and greenhouse gas emissions," said Jason Morrison, program director at the Pacific Institute and the report’s lead author. "With impacts of climate change on water resources already affecting businesses, this report provides a first-of-its-kind list of key questions companies and investors should be asking – and responding to – in an integrated way."
The report identifies water-related risks specific to eight key industries, including:
* Electric Power: Drought-induced water shortages have already caused power plant shutdowns in Europe, Brazil and the southeast U.S. that led to price spikes and reduced economic growth. The power industry depends heavily on water and accounts for a staggering 39 percent of freshwater withdrawals in the U.S.
* High-Tech: Eleven of the world's 14 largest semiconductor factories are in the Asia-Pacific region, where water scarcity risks are especially severe. IT firms require vast amounts of ultra clean water – Intel and Texas Instruments alone used 11 billion gallons to make silicon chips in 2007. A water-related shutdown at a fabrication facility operated by these firms could result in $100-$200 million in missed revenue during a quarter, or $0.02 or $0.04 per share.
* Beverage: Coca-Cola and PepsiCo bottlers lost their operating licenses in parts of India due to water shortages and all major beverage firms are facing stiff public opposition to new bottling plants – and to buying bottled drinking water altogether. Nestlé Waters has been fighting for five years, for example, to build the country's largest bottling plant in McCloud, CA.
* Agriculture: Reduced water availability is already impacting food commodity prices, as shown by last year's sharp increase in global rice prices triggered by a drought-induced collapse of rice production in Australia. Roughly 70 percent of the water used globally is for agriculture, with as much as 90 percent in developing countries where populations are growing fastest.
The report also identified specific water-related risks for apparel, biotechnology/pharmaceutical, forest products and metals/mining firms.
"This report makes clear that companies and investors can no longer take water for granted," said Anne Stausboll, chief executive officer of the California Public Employees' Retirement System, the nation's largest public pension fund with approximately $170 billion in assets. "As a global investor, we must be mindful of water-related risks in many parts of the world and how climate change will likely exacerbate many of those risks. Disclosure by companies is an important first step in improving transparency around the risks and opportunities associated with water and climate change."
The report also highlights the intensifying conflict between energy use and water availability. With increasing frequency, choosing one of these resources means undermining the other – the other usually being water. For example, the billions of dollars spent to expand corn-based ethanol production in the U.S. and oil sands development in Canada has helped ensure increased fuel supplies, but at the expense of significant water impacts and greenhouse gas emissions that could ultimately limit these ventures in the future.
Despite these looming challenges, the report concludes that businesses and investors are largely unaware of water-related risks or how climate change will likely exacerbate them. Weak corporate disclosure on potential risk exposure and response strategies is especially glaring.

To evaluate and effectively address water risks, companies should take the following actions:
* Measure the company’s water footprint (i.e., water use and wastewater discharge) throughout its entire value chain, including suppliers and product use.
* Assess physical, regulatory and reputational risks associated with its water footprint, and seek to align the evaluation with the company’s energy and climate risk assessments.
* Engage key stakeholders (e.g., local communities, non-governmental organizations, government bodies, suppliers, and employees) as a part of water risk assessment, long-term planning and implementation activities.
* Integrate water issues into strategic business planning and governance structures.
* Disclose and communicate water performance and associated risks.
Similarly, investors should pursue the following steps to better understand potential water-related exposure in their portfolio companies:
* Independently assess companies’ water risk exposure.
* Demand more meaningful corporate water disclosure.
* Encourage companies to incorporate water issues into their climate change strategies.
* Emphasize the business opportunity side of the water challenge.

“Water stocks are not recession proof but are recession resistant”

Investorideas.com Water Stocks Podcast; Bill Brennan Discusses the Performance of the Kinetics Water Infrastructure Fund, Global Water Industry Trends and Investing Trends

“Water stocks are not recession proof but are recession resistant”

POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC –October 7, 2008- Investorideas.com and its Water-stocks.com Podcast series “Investing in Water” present an in-depth interview with Mr. Bill Brennan, President & Managing Partner of Aqua Terra Asset Management and Senior Portfolio Manager of the Praetor Global Water Fund. Mr. Brennan discusses the performance of the Kinetics Water Infrastructure Fund and global trends specific to the sector including water re-use and reclamation.

According to Mr. Brennan the Kinetics Water Infrastructure Fund, launched in June 2007, focuses on water infrastructure both globally and in the US. The fund is about 65% invested in companies that are domiciled outside of the US.

Mr. Brennan reports, ”“What we try to do is invest in the areas where infrastructure spending is accelerating. We have seen it go from about $250 -260 Billion 5 years ago to $520 Billion moving to a Trillion dollars in the next 4-5 years on an annual basis. We invest in companies that have a 30-40% exposure to water infrastructure and growing.

So you won’t see us involved in areas that are not water company related. We won’t be in the GE’s and the Siemens of the world, because even though they are big players in water and water infrastructure, their revenue does not move the needle enough from a contribution standpoint to make it into our universe. We have to watch those companies because they are actively involved in acquisitions and they have become the leaders in technology. We focus on the small and mid-cap companies that are really going to benefit from the increase in spending globally.”

In discussing the fund performance Mr. Brennan tells us, “The fund continues to out-perform the broader market by about 800-900 basis points in regard to the S&P and we also outperform the water ETF’s on an absolute performance basis.”

“Water stocks are not recession proof but are recession resistant”, he notes. “People have to take a look at necessities- where they spend. Water is a necessity along with power and waste management.”
